Due to the freezing, February cold, it was at times difficult to find smiling people outdoor in Copenhagen – yet there was always a model running from one show to another.

Discovering the heritage of fashion photography.

The exhibition ”Motefotografi – tradisjon og nyskapning (Fashion Photography – Tradition and Innovation)” presents a historical look-back on the genre fashion photography. Works of eight Scandinavian photographers that are all active today are also hand-picked to illustrate contemporary variety and complexity of the genre:

Siren Lauvdal, Benjamin Alexander Huseby, Jørgen Gomnæs, Lukas Renlund, Torkil Gudnason, Mads Teglers, Julia Hetta og AORTA/Marco Grizelj & Kristian Krän.

Melancholic feel

Danish Mads Tegler likes to shoot portraits and art photographs. He tells us what he finds typical for Scandinavian fashion photography:

- It‘s very melancholic and modern, but at the same time it makes me think of bold edges.

No more rules

What started as a small genre at the beginning of the 20^th century has now become one of the biggest creative fields of photography today. Not too long ago this industry was only about describing, showing off and selling a product.

A new era has given photographers wide open doors when it comes to being creative and letting the imagination run wild. Especially the transition from analog to digital camera has played a major role for the continuation of ideas and imagination of photo stories.

Alice in Wonderland

The exhibition at the Preus Museum in Horten shows how far such ideas and incredible imagination can play out on photos.

One example is the Danish photographer Torkil Gudnason who uses inspiration from Tim Burtons ‘’Alice in Wonderland’’ to capture the imagination of a fantasy land in his own interpretation of ‘’Alice.”

Own voice

Norwegian photographer Siren Lauvdal was present at the opening on Sunday. She is proud have her series shown at the exhibition:

- Fashion photography has always been my biggest passion. If it were possible, I would live from only shooting fashion photos.

- Seeing all the different works hanging on the walls here, it is clear that each and every one of us have our own voice, which shines through in our photographs. That’s what makes photography so amazing.

Next Generation

Being the youngest of them all, Finnish photographer Lukas Renlund has already worked for magazines such as Smug, Elle Man and Zoot Magazine. Renlunds goal is to turn his work into a personal project and at the same time being able to live from it.

Where do you see the future of Scandinavian fashion photography go?

- I definitely think there is a greater future for it. The typical clean and solid style that we have here in Scandinavia is already very popular in the USA, and it’s only a matter of time when the rest of the world will discover it.

Describe yourself in five words:

Dag Tjersland (Baltazar Ristorante and Café Transformer) and Jonas Leborg (popop.no) welcomed us to an evening out of the ordinary at DogA Thursday night. The Chef Devil provided amazing food and The Art Rebel hung up paintings made by Espen Eiborg – Toyland Superstars. DJ Natalia Barbin was rippin it up and the designer Kathrrine Nørgård presented her glamorous Spring /Summer 2012 collection.

Beate Godager invited Oslo Nights to follow her backstage, before and under the FIVE FW12 show.

The Norwegian designer is based in Copenhagen where she aims to kick-start her fashion career. She is not a stranger though, to returning to the Norwegian market in the future.

Vixen Awards is Norways first and only award rewarding persistant bloggers in various categories, from streetstyle to inspirational bloggers. “Blogger of the Year” was awarded Tegne-Hanne.

Samsøe & Samsøe showed their newest collection at Stratos on Saturday, the last day of Oslo Fashion Week. Afterwards it was time for the OFW closing party, gathering all of the people who have contributed this week, and some others, for one final party. As the evening turned into night more and more people gathered, and though (or maybe because?) it got extremely crowded everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

The models walked behind a black curtain, only showing their legs and shoes, at the Helene Westby viewing in White Light Studios last Thursday. Helene Westbye define her style as rock’n roll with a chic feminine twist, strong expressions and pure lines. The guests could enjoy themselves with mingling and free drinks both before and after the show.

Moods of Norway showed and celebrated their newest collection, Cocktail Mountaineering, at Vulkan Friday night. The catwalk was decorated with mountains and the models were dressed in, among other outfits, winter jackets and cocktail dresses. A group of dancers, with Gitte Lill in front, preformed on the catwalk among the models and there was entertainment in form of singing later in the evening. The party continued into the night, as always on Moods of Norway’s parties.

The Norwegian label Epilogue by Eva Emanuelsen presented a beautiful women’s wear collection for fall/winter 2012 last Thursday. The collection was presented by models standing in the window frame at Epilogue’s showroom while people enjoyed delicious finger food and champagne and Wilhelm X played soft music.

On the second day of Oslo Fashion Week Fam Irvoll showed her newest collection. The show started with musical entertainment, followed by adorable children who showed Fam’s collection for the youngest. The adult collection was clearly inspired by monsters and, of course, a lot of colors and playfulness. After the show the party continued at Stratos.

 This years Nåløyet Award winners are Norwegian Rain and Cala & Jade.

- Norwegian Rain won because they stood out from the other nominees. Their technical level is very high, the concept is unique, strong and very pure. They are such worthy winners, says Gisle Mardal, head of jury and director of Norwegian Fashion Institute.

We are well into this seasons Fashion Week, and fashionistas are gathering to sip sparkling liquids and kiss cheeks at all the fashion shows and events. Tonight was the night of the annual, prestigeous Nåløyet – “The eye of a needle” – awards by Henne, where Norway’s most talented and promising designers are cheered and rewarded.

A jury of both national and international knowledgeable judges, mostly within the fashion industry, have had the tough job of choosing the candidates, and subsequently the even tougher job of deciding the winner.

Gisle Mardal agrees to the fact that it certainly gets more and more difficult to chose which candidates to include in the nomination process, as the industry level has increased the past years.

This year Norwegian Rain, created by the designduo Alexander Helle and T-Michael, won the price of Best Designer.

-  It feels absolutely delightful to have won! Many of the other candidates are good friends of ours, and we know how competent and talented they are, so we feel really honored to even be nominated, Alexander Helle of Norwegian Rain, tell us backstage.

The brand with the catchy name focuses solely on raincoats, an idea sprung out of Alexander Helle living in Bergen for most of his life. Craving better looking outerwear living under constant rainclouds, he persuaded his friend and tailor T-Michael to join in on his project.

Now Norwegian Rain is very popular in Bergen, but the designduo are also trying to make it internationally, and are particulary «big in Japan», with the fashionable Japanese fancying their minimalistic, slighty avant garde esthetics.

-  I hope this award will give us a foot in the door, one that it will lead to all kinds of exciting opportunities. Either way, to win feels like a huge vitaminboost!, Helle continues.

Cala & Jade won the price of Best accessorize designer.

- Their love for their field and work, and the brilliant consept of the «moduls» made them clear and worthy winners, though the competition was tough, says Gisle Mardal.
